The HP Elitebook 8760w/8770w has 4 physical memory slots, 2 are under the keyboard (Primary Memory Modules), and 2 are accessible from the bottom (Expansion Memory Modules). The memory slots are called DIMMs and every other one is paired. so 1 and 3 2 and 4. You can have two 4GB sticks and two 2GB sticks but they always have to be two. Though, I currently have all four slots on my old board populated with ram and have a great OC.The reason why people "lose" good OC ability with more RAM is due to inadequate power delivery.
